Hastings Rock and Fell Club go to Dorset

An on and off club tradition of a climbing trip to the sea cliffs of Swanage on Good Friday, was honoured this year with a group of eight members congregating at the Cattle Troughs area for a season opener.

From a personal perspective I was aiming to have a go at a climb called Isis (VS 4c) which I had attempted at the end of last season. On that occasion I had backed off at half height when the way forward appeared to be a much harder grade than expected. Memories of a similar situation on Lundy Island and a “lets press on“ attitude had led to a nasty fall, thankfully without too much damage. So, on this occasion caution was judged the better part.

Today, after a couple of warm up routes another attempt was launched after a more thorough perusal of the guide book. A more circumspect ascent confirmed that I had indeed gone off route the first time. The climb was successfully completed albeit with a rest on the rope at one point.

One more climb and then it was time to pack up the gear and head homeward although some stayed on for the weekend and enjoyed the excellent weather.

Thanks to everyone who came along for a great day and I am sure that the club will be back in Dorset before too long.
