A small but enthusiast group camped on the shores of Lake Coniston with a view to exploring the area\u00a0and climbing and walking in this region of the lakes.<\/p>\n
Some of the highlights of the visit included an attempt on \u201cEliminate A\u201d a multi pitch VS on Dow Crag.\u00a0The attempt was thwarted after a couple of pitches by damp and slippery rock and the threat of more rain\u00a0coming in. The party abseiled to the safety of the adjacent gulley, followed by a long scree descent to\u00a0Goats Water Tarn.<\/p>\n
The walking team ( Ruth) summitted the Old Man of Coniston in a mist and took a long route via the\u00a0Seathwaite Fells and Walna Scar Road back to camp.<\/p>\n
The weather for the most part consisted of sunshine and showers so a lot of our time was spent at lower\u00a0levels, although not without interest. Some items stick in the memory, such as the town of Coniston itself\u00a0which, though small, had an interesting museum and a caf\u00e9 serving huge slices of cake (visited more than\u00a0once).<\/p>\n
A couple of odd things were seen, these included a fallen tree by a Tarn Hows. At first I could not make\u00a0out why it seemed odd, but then it registered that into this, someone (or more) had hammered edgewise,\u00a0literally hundreds of pennies and two pence pieces in long lines parallel to the grain. Very strange.<\/p>\n
The other item followed a walk along the shore of the lake, and lunch in an inn in Torver. The old red\u00a0phone box outside had been converted into a fish tank and had various species of fish swimming around
\ninside. Try making a call from there.<\/p>\n
Despite the weather I enjoyed the trip and perhaps the club could consider another visit next year.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
